Endodontic Therapy

Endodontic Dental Procedure (Root Canal) in Fairfax

Endodontic procedure is another way of referring to a root canal.  This is the treatment your dentist uses to clean infection from the inside of the tooth and prevent future infections.  (The word endodontic comes from the Greek words meaning “inside” and “tooth”).

When a tooth has a deep cavity or is cracked, bacteria can get into the pulp tissue located inside the tooth and the germs can cause infection.  If left untreated, a collection of pus may form causing pain and swelling.  Not only can this injure the jawbone and adversely affect your overall health, but the infection can also result in the tooth having to be removed.

Here are some signs you may need endodontic treatment (a root canal):

  • Severe toothache
  • Dark discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in the gum area
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Pain when chewing or biting down on food

In some cases a tooth may be past endodontic restoration.  This occurs when the roots are severely fractured, the root canals cannot be accessed or the tooth has insufficient bone support.

Having an endodontic treatment or root canal can save a tooth from extraction and when possible this is the procedure performed.  Missing teeth can affect your ability to bite and chew, negatively affect your overall health, and can make you self-conscious.

Endodontic treatment involves several visits to the dentist.  First, the affected tissue is removed from inside the tooth and down around the roots.  The interior of the tooth is then cleaned and sealed.  The next step is to fill the tooth with dental restoration.  In the case of extensive decay, your dentist will probably place a “crown” on the tooth for strength and protection.  Cared for properly, along with your other teeth, a tooth restored with endodontic treatment can help keep that smile beautiful and bright and can last a lifetime.
